Investor Visas by the Numbers – South America

We continuously analyze each of our client’s markets, so we can better understand your business needs.

At Joorney, research is a crucial part of our process. We continuously analyze each of our client’s markets, so we can better understand your business needs. Recently, our dedicated research team has seen a significant rise in interest in L-1 and E-2 visas in South America, so we decided to investigate further.

South America has always been on our radar. After all, Joorney business plan specialists are fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese, among many other languages. Here are our latest findings:

About E-2 Visas

A quick recovery

We’ve discovered that in 2013, South America accounted for 2% of all E-2 visas issued, with 792 visas in total, an increase of 2.3 times more than the number issued since 2010. South America also accounted for 6% of all L-1 visas issued, with 4,319 visas in total, rising by nearly 20% since 2010.

The aftermath of the economic crisis

We took our analysis a bit further and looked into the top three countries in which the E-2 visas had been issued in Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela. We’ve discovered that between 2008 and 2010, as the result of the global economic crisis, the number of E-2 visas issued in Argentina was reduced by nearly 30% and the number of E-2 visas issued in Colombia was divided by 6.6. Venezuela on the other hand, was the only country to have shown a significant rise in the number of E-2 visas issued, doubling the amount from 2008 to 2010, from 51 to 103 visas issued. Since 2010, the number of E-2 Visas issued in Argentina has grown threefold to attain 310 visas in 2013, the number of E-2 Visas issued in Colombia was multiplied by nearly 3.5 to attain 220 Visas in 2013 and the number of E-2 Visas issued in Venezuela rose by 12.7%.

Hyperinflation

Did you know that due to the major hyperinflation Venezuela and Argentina have been experiencing since January 2014, the number of E-2 visas issued for the country has been rising significantly? Will Venezuela surpass Colombia and Argentina with the number of visas issued in 2014? We’ll have to wait until the end of the year to find out, but as of 2013, Venezuela made up 16% of E-2 visa distribution in South America, with Argentina and Colombia are issuing the most E-2 visas in South America, with respectively 310 (39%) and 220 (28%) E-2 visas issued.

Talking about L-1 Visas

Slowly rising

The figures for L-1 visas issued are also on the rise in South America. Our findings concluded that this is largely due to Brazil, which is by far the country that issued the most L-1 in South America, accounting for half the visas issued in the continent, with 2,157 issued in 2013. Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela also account for a major part of L-1 visas issued in South America, making 15%, 9%, and 16% of visas issued in the continent.

A Continent largely dominated by Brasil

The figures for L-1 visas issued are also on the rise in South America. Our findings concluded that this is largely due to Brazil, which is by far the country that issued the most L-1 in South America, accounting for half the visas issued in the continent, with 2,157 issued in 2013. Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela also account for a major part of L-1 visas issued in South America, making 15%, 9%, and 16% of visas issued in the continent

You may ask yourselves, why does Brazil make up 50% of L-1 visas issued in South America? This is because Brazil does not have a treaty with the US for E-2 visas, leaving applicants with the option of an L-1 visa process.
